When I think of school harvest festivals, I remember wild days of too much candy and a goldfish in a plastic baggie as a "prize." I say it's time to reclaim that tradition for the grown-ups in the room.
Think caramel apples and spiced cider, but elevated: mulled wine instead of juice boxes. Nature is your new Michael's store this season, forage for acorns, gourds, pinecones, and dried leaves before you buy a single decoration.
Let the season set your menu too: squash, apples, root vegetables, and anything fresh from your garden or the farmers market. Add a caramel apple bar, a mulled wine or hot chocolate station, or a cider bar with optional add-ins and toppings.
A little friendly competition keeps things lively: guess-the-pumpkin's-weight, or try naming the apple variety in a blind tasting. Prizes: a jug of local cider, a pumpkin spice candle, or homemade apple butter.
Invite guests to bring extra garden bounty to share in a produce stand.
